Your Days are Numbered: A Retirement Perspective from Psalm 90
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12
Retirement is often thought of as the finish line. It’s the long-awaited, long-anticipated season of rest after decades of work. Our culture paints a picture of an ideal retirement centering around leisure activities like golf, travel, and other fun activities. These are fine but is this all our “golden years” are meant to be?
The Bible doesn’t have much to say about the concept of retirement. The closest thing is in Numbers 8:23-26 when God specifies that the Levites must retire from service in the Tabernacle at age 50 but they remain in service as guards.
Just because the Bible doesn’t directly address retirement as we know it, there are still truths we can apply to retirement.
Moses reminds us in Psalm 90 that we gain a heart of wisdom when we remember the finiteness of our lives. All our days are ordained already by God; and be they short or long, we gain wisdom when we remember that and seek to use the days we have to honor and glorify God.
For retirees, this psalm speaks with special clarity. You now hold something incredibly valuable: time. The question is how will you use it?
Retirement doesn’t lengthen our days, but it does change how we spend them. Rather than working full-time, many retirees can now choose how to fill their days. What can you choose to do with the time that remains that will leave an eternal impact?
Psalm 90 ends with a prayer: “Establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.”
You may have finished working but God is not finished with you. He isn’t finished growing you in Christ and He isn’t finished using you to bless others and grow His Kingdom.
Retirement is about finishing well. Your legacy is not only the financial resources you pass on, but the lives you have impacted for Christ. Using your resources, your time, talent, and treasure, for His Kingdom allows your impact to ripple through generations and to store up treasure in Heaven.
Redeeming the Retirement Years
Every season of life is rich with opportunity, retirement is no different. Free from the daily grind, you may now have a chance to invest your days more intentionally than ever before.
That may mean volunteering, discipling younger believers, giving generously, or simply being present with family. It may also mean ensuring that your financial plan reflects your values, so that your stewardship honors Christ even in your investments.
At Beacon Wealth Consultants, we believe retirement is not a retreat but a redeployment. We come alongside Christians to help them steward their resources faithfully, aligning their financial resources with their faith.
Until Christ returns or God calls you home, you have the blessing and privilege to use each of your days for His glory, don’t waste a single one!
