John Wiley & Sons, or more recently referred to as Wiley, is a global publishing company with more than 5,000 employees whose focus is academic publishing. On the New York Stock Exchange since 1995, the company trades under the symbols JW.A. Established in Manhattan in 1807 by Charles Wiley, the company has published for renowned writers such as Washington Irving, Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe. The focus of the company began changing in 1865 as it moved away from literary concentrations. Wiley’s primary emphasis was publishing scholarly information geared toward scientific, technical and engineering material. In 1867, the company changed its name to Wiley and Sons. Publicly owned since 1962, Wiley is one of the world’s oldest independent publishing companiesmanufacturing various books, journals and encyclopedias. Though most of their products are offered in print and electronically, they also offer online training and online educational materials. These materials are geared towards undergraduates, graduates, and those continuing their higher education.

In pursuit of helping others achieve success, Wiley collaborates with both educators and organizations worldwide.The company advanced their publishing accessibility to China in 2001. Since then, China has become the 6thlargest market for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) material. Continuing their growth, Wiley and Sons extended publishing operations to India in 2006 followed by the opening of an office in Dubai in the latter part of 2010. The company also holds sales agreements with academic organizations in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. In 2012, they instituted Wiley Brasil Editora LTDA located in São Paulo, Brazil. As of 2018, the company has over 15 offices worldwide.
Since the inauguration of the Nobel Prize in 1901, Wiley has published compositions of more than 450 Nobel Laureates, in every category in which the prize is awarded. 2007 marked Wiley’s bicentennial for which they facilitated a year-long celebration that included festivities on four continents in ten countries. As part of their celebration, Wiley and Sons were privileged to ring the closing bell at the NYSE on May 1st. That same year the company publishedKnowledge for Generations: Wiley and the Global Publishing Industry, 1807-2007, which represented the company’s fundamental role in “publishing against a social, cultural, and economic backdrop”.
