On a warm summer evening this week, families will gather in parks, town squares, and backyards across America. Children wave flags as they wait for fireworks to begin. Neighbors share meals and conversation. Bands play patriotic songs while veterans, parents, and grandparents tell stories that connect generations.
For many Americans, Independence Day is a celebration of freedom, family, and community. This year, however, the celebration carries even greater significance. America marks its 250th anniversary!
As Christians, moments like this invite us not just to celebrate, but to reflect.
While our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), God has chosen to place each of us in a particular nation, at a particular time, for a particular purpose. As we look back over 250 years of American history, there is a lot to be grateful for.
No nation is perfect, and America is no exception. Our history includes both remarkable achievements and painful failures. Yet God’s blessings upon our nation have been extraordinary. Comparatively, we enjoy freedom, opportunities, and prosperity that much of the world has never known. We worship openly. We gather freely. We build businesses, support ministries, raise families, and pursue opportunities that still draw many to our shores to share these blessings.
These blessings should produce more than patriotism. They should produce gratitude.
George Washington, in his first inaugural address said,
“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.”
Like Washington, we can be thankful for God’s blessings on us and our nation. Gratitude naturally leads to an important question: How are we stewarding the blessings we’ve been given?
Freedom Creates Opportunity
One of America’s greatest blessings has been freedom.
The freedom to worship.
The freedom to speak.
The freedom to gather.
The freedom to build businesses, own property, pursue education, and provide for our families.
These freedoms have created extraordinary opportunities. Generations of Americans have been able to start companies, innovate, create jobs, support charitable causes, and build financial security for their families.
For Christians, however, freedom is not merely a privilege to enjoy. It is a responsibility to steward.
In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), servants were entrusted with resources and expected to manage them faithfully. The issue was faithful stewardship of what was entrusted. Everything ultimately belonged to the master.
The same is true for us today. Our time, abilities, opportunities, and financial resources all belong to God. We are called to manage them wisely for His glory.
America’s Greatest Financial Blessing Isn’t Wealth, It’s Opportunity
When people think about America’s prosperity, they often focus on wealth. But perhaps America’s greatest financial blessing is not wealth itself, but opportunity.
Few places in history have provided ordinary people with such broad access to economic participation. Today, millions of Americans can invest through things like retirement plans, brokerage accounts, mutual funds, and ETFs. We can save, invest, build wealth, and give generously.
These opportunities are gifts from the Lord, but they also raise important stewardship questions.
As Christian investors, we should ask ourselves:
- What businesses am I helping to fund?
- What products and services am I helping to advance?
- Are my investments aligned with my values?
- How can I use the financial opportunities God has provided to further His purposes?
At Beacon Wealth, we believe investing is about more than pursuing financial returns. Investing is an exercise in stewardship.
The capital God entrusts to us has influence. Every investment decision represents ownership in real companies making real products, providing real services, and shaping our culture in real ways.
That is why we believe Christians should thoughtfully consider how their investments align with their faith. Stewardship doesn’t stop when we write a check to our church or support a favorite ministry. It extends to every area of our financial lives, including our investments.
The freedoms and opportunities available in America allow us to be intentional about how we invest. What a remarkable privilege, and responsibility that is.
Looking Forward
As the United States enters its next chapter, Christians have an opportunity to lead with gratitude, humility, and faithfulness.
We can thank God for the freedoms we’ve enjoyed while recognizing that every blessing comes from Him.
We can appreciate the opportunities that previous generations worked to create and preserve while remembering that those opportunities carry responsibilities.
And we can commit ourselves to being faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us our families, our work, our resources, our influence, and our investments.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, may we thank God for His provision, pray for our nation, and seek to use every opportunity He has given us for His glory and the advancement of His Kingdom.
